THE CIGAR ROLLING Tangier, Morocco

Date: Afternoon. Always afternoon. This is not a morning activity.

Tangier is not a destination. It is a condition. Paul Bowles arrived in 1947 and stayed 52 years. Barbara Hutton threw parties at her medina palace that the neighbors still talk about. The Rolling Stones recorded in the kasbah. Keith Richards owned a house here until 2008. Ian Fleming passed through and took notes.

We found a riad with a courtyard, a ceiling fan, and a torcedor who has been rolling cigars since before any of this was considered an experience. He will produce something perfect in under a minute. You will attempt the same. He will say nothing. His silence will be instructive.

You will smoke what you made in the courtyard with mint tea and whatever else the afternoon demands, watching the light change over the rooftops of a city that has never once cared what you thought of it.
